Where is the need for this project?

There are over 18,000 16-25 year olds in custody in the UK - an increase of more than a third in the past ten years. Two-thirds of these say that a mentor would help them to stop re-offending, particularly if the mentor were someone who themselves had broken the cycle of offending. However, while mentoring provision does exist, it is often duplicated and sporadic, and does not work to any minimum standards.

Where do you hope this project can go?

In response, this project aims to provide joined-up mentoring services for all 16-25 year olds leaving custody. It brings together a consortium of organisations large and small to work together to take this proven innovation to a universal scale. The organisations will share data, evidence and training and work together to strengthen the mentoring of young offenders across the country.
